Chairs crumble under 'heavyweight' claims

New Delhi, March 17 -- The newly built Talkatora Indoor Stadium, where the XXX 5th Commonwealth Boxing Championships are being held, seems to have been commissioned in haste. A close look reveals the venue, which was inaugurated by Sports Minister, MS Gill, before the event, is far from ready. From the seats to the flooring, there are several shortcomings. But the most glaring is the quality of seats. Around 20 seats have already been broken or taken out. To add to the embarrassment, a Scottish boxer narrowly escaped getting injured after his seat gave way, unable to bear his weight. The seating apart, the venue still requires finishing touches everywhere. The glass panes are not polished. The flooring is dirty. "This is a test event for us also. The problems faced will be rectified as soon the championship gets over," said Anand Kumar Tiwari, Director Public Relations, New Delhi Municipal Council. "The seats didn't break but came out due to some fixing problem. They will be rectified after the event." "The chairs have been recommended by the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee and they are of international standards." On other remaining work, Tiwari said, "The structural part is completed and only minor works are left."

For sheer passion, intensity and thrill nothing can match a boxing bout. Add to it a splash of entertainment. With the country's top boxers - including Vijender - participating, it's a must-see for every sporting buff. All this for only Rs 100!
