IPL governing council meets ''informally''

Dharamsala, Apr 16 (PTI) BCCI''s top brass tonight held an informal discussion on the raging controversy over Kochi franchise and IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi''s public spat with minister Shashi Tharoor. The top officials, who gathered here for the inauguration of an academy and to watch the first IPL match being played at this picturesque venue, discussed the issue in detail but no decision has been taken on the future course of action. "The matter was discussed informally among the members of the IPL Governing Council who are here. No decision on the future course of action has yet been taken. We will continue to have discussion," a top BCCI source told PTI. This is the first time that the Governing Council members met after the Modi-Tharoor spat broke out. Modi, who has been in the eye of a storm for his tweet which triggered off a controversy, was not invited for the discussion although he is here for the match. Although no meeting was officially scheduled, the members took the opportunity to meet since they were all here in response to an invitation by the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association president Anurag Thakur. The council is apparently not too happy with Modi''s style of functioning that has spawned a lot of controversies, the most damaging so far being the Kochi IPL bid. BCCI President Shashank Manohar, secretary N Srinivasan, IPL vice-Chairman Niranjan Shah, chairman of the media and finance committee Rajiv Shukla and council members Chirayu Amin and Arun Jaitely are present here. Modi flew in this afternoon and told reporters at the Gaggle airport that there was no controversy and there will be no special meeting among the members on the issue. "We are a transparent body and we have nothing to hide. There is no scheduled meeting to discuss the issue," Modi said. Modi, who wields considerable influence in the powerful post of IPL Commissioner and Chairman, has found himself in a spot of bother after his public disclosure of the stake-holding structure in the Kochi franchisee which has snowballed into a major controversy. Although as per the IPL constitution, Modi cannot be removed as the Commissioner till 2012, he may be asked to discuss all issues with the IPL Governing Council before making anything public.
