PTF plans Bopanna-Qureshi games to raise flood relief funds

Karachi, Sep 11 (PTI) Lauding their message of peace, the Pakistan Tennis Federation is planning to organise a series of tennis matches featuring the Indo-Pak pairing of Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi to raise funds for the victims of the devastating floods in the country. Pakistan Tennis Federation President Dilawar Abbas said the PTF is planning to organise a series of such matches with the US Open men''s doubles runners-up. Abbas said the growing popularity of the pair in both countries would help raise much needed funds for the flood victims. "At the moment Aisam and Rohan are the talk of the town with their outstanding performances in the US Open and we are planning to have matches between the two in both countries later this year," he said. Abbas said the PTF would also request Sania Mirza, the Indian tennis star and the wife of Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik to be present for the matches as she is also a popular figure in Pakistan. The Indo-Pak pair made waves in the US Open by reaching the final of the men''s doubles and Qureshi also managed to reach the final of the mixed doubles. All channels and newspapers have given extensive coverage to Qureshi''s performance with lot of emphasis also being laid on the fact that the pair were a perfect example that Pakistan and India could co-exist peacefully and that both had made a strong statement for normal relations between the two countries. Pakistan tennis player and Qureshi''s Davis Cup partner, Aqeel Khan said he had done everyone proud with his performances. "Aisam and Rohan have formed a formidable pair on the international circuit and they should very soon climb up into the top five pair rankings," he added.
