New Delhi, Nov 4 (IANS) A fighting century by Sridharan Sriram only delayed the inevitable for Assam as Tamil Nadu romped home by seven wickets in the Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match in Chennai Thursday and picked up five points.

Overnight 159 for four, Assam, courtesy a 112-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Sriram (121, 15 x 4) and Tarjinder Singh (99, 12x4), managed to stretch the game. But once the stand was broken, the rest collapsed for just 51 runs.

Seamer Sunil Sam came away with four for 56 after Lakashmipathy Balaji had done the initial damage with two crucial strikes on the third evening.

Tamil Nadu, needing just 120 runs for victory, then cantered through as openers Abhinav Mukund (32) and Anirudha Srikkanth (48) put on 64 runs. Though skipper Dinesh Karthik failed again, the hosts were not to be denied a win despite a 33-minute rain stoppage.

In Jammu, Maharashtra bowlers beat Jammu and Kashmir by 10 wickets at the Gandhi Memorial Science College Ground.

The hosts began the day on 134 for two but barring Arshad Bhatt (95) and Raman Dutta (47 not out), none of the Jammu batsman showed the stomach for fight and were bundled out for 347 in the second innings.

Needing just 26 runs to win, Maharashtra's openers clinched the victory in the seventh over.
