New Delhi, Nov 11 (PTI) Left-arm spinner Murali Kartik heavily dented the Assam middle and lower order with important breakthroughs as Railways reduced the visitors to 174 for seven, on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy Super League Group A match at the Karnail Singh Stadium, here today. The left-arm spinner took four for 31 and struck blows whenever Assam tried to build partnerships. Assam elected to bat but the decision backfired as both the openers --- Dheeraj Jadhav (9) and Parvej Aziz (0) -- were back in the pavilion with scorecard reading 15 for two. Skipper Amol Mazumdar (44) then did some damage control sharing couple of important partnerships with veteran S Sriram (31) and Deepak Sharma (21) for the third and fourth wicket respectively. Kartik broke Mazumdar''s 54-run partnership with Sriram by scalping the latter and then removed Sharma also. Later, he dismissed stumper Kumal Saika (23) and Dhiraj Goswami (1) also, puncturing Assam''s hopes of repairing the innings. Mazumdar departed after making 44 off 132 balls with just three shots to the fence. He became victim of leg-break bowler M Suresh. At stumps, Tarjinder Singh was unbeaten on 34 along with Arlen Konwar who is batting on six. Tarjinder hit five boundaries in his 92-ball stay the crease.
