Swimming Australia's acting head coach Leigh Nugent has been appointed to the role permanently until 2013 with the option for a further three years, the organisation said on Tuesday. Nugent replaced Alan Thompson, who took redundancy in January when Swimming Australia split up the head coach and high performance general manager roles he had occupied.

"This is a fantastic opportunity and one that I'm very passionate and excited about," Nugent said in a statement.

"The Australian swim team plays a unique and important role in elite sport in this country, particularly in relation Olympic success."

The 59-year-old was previously head coach at the Athens Olympics where the team won seven gold, five silver and three bronze medals. He had been working as the national youth coach since 2005.

Australian swimming's national championships, which double as selection trials for the New Delhi Commonwealth Games team, are being held in Sydney this week.
