India could host a Super Series tournament soon: Verma

New Delhi, April 10 (IANS) The Badminton Association of India (BAI) says the organisation of the Badminton Asia Championships, beginning Monday, will decide how soon the country gets to host a Super Series event.

The tournament, which will see the participation of 21 countries, is also a test event for the October 3-14 Commonwealth Games and BAI president V.K. Verma is satisfied with the arrangements at the renovated Sri Fort Sports Complex, the venue for the event.

'The arrangements at the stadium has been excellent. It may be a little early to say but we soon hope to organise a Super Series event in India. A lot will depend on how we organise it and how the players perform at this tournament,' Verma told reporters here Saturday.

The Super Series consists of 13 tournaments, including a Masters Finals at the end of the year.

Verma was also happy that India had got top billing in two of the five categories at the Badminton Asia Championships. While Saina Nehwal is top seeded in the women's singles, Jwala Gutta and V. Diju have got the top billing in the mixed doubles.

'It is for the first time that out of five events, India have got the top billing in two. It is a great news for the Indian badminton.'

Verma said the sales of the tickets have been encouraging and they working on increasing the sales further.

'In Delhi, everyone looks for free passes. But the ticket sales have been phenomenal. Five thousand tickets have already been sold and we are working on increasing the sale further,' he said.
