Aston Villa's Agbonlahor wants to play alongside Rooney for England

London, July 15(ANI): Aston Villa forward Gabby Agbonlahor has said that he wants to become Wayne Rooney's England strike partner.

Agbonlahor was left out of the squad for the World Cup in South Africa, but manager Fabio Capello has since singled him out as one of his stars of the future.

"It's given me a boost ahead of the new season. I would relish the opportunity to play alongside Wayne Rooney in future squads. Anyone would, look how good a player he is," The Sun quoted Agbonlahor, as saying.

"What I want to do now is show the manager I deserve it. I'm determined to get back in, but I know there's going to be some tough competition - there'll be young players trying to get in among it now."

"It was disappointing to miss out on the World Cup, but me and some of the other lads have to look at ourselves and question whether we did enough to make it in. That's why I want to do more this season," he added.

The 23-year-old's call for changes in the set-up of the England game was backed by Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce.

"Like Spain or Germany we must protect the future of the national team by developing the players better. Our current players can take us to the European Championships, no doubt about that," Allardyce said.

"From there on we have to make sure we build a foundation to try to make us a nation stronger than we are in international tournaments. We've got the greatest domestic competition in the world but the downside is we've got fewer and fewer English players playing in that league," he added. (ANI)
