Sat, Jul 31 10 10:27 PM

Kolkata, July 31 (PTI) Substitute Cavin Lobo struck twice as defending champions Goa blanked Punjab 3-0 and inched closer to the semi-final of the 64th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy in a floodlight match at Yuba Bharati Krirangan here today. In the first match of the quarterfinal group A league, Services brought their campaign back with a 2-1 win over Karnataka. After two matches each, Goa now sit on top of the group A with six points, while Services have three points with Punjab slipped to third place as Karnataka made an exit with two losses on the trot. Again playing as a substitue in their second match, Lobo who was brought on in the 31st minute put Goa ahead in the 55th minute following a goalless first-half. He scored his second in the 88th minute while Branco Cardozo scored in the 90+6th minute to complete the rout. As a matter of fact, Lobo had scored the winner in their victory over Karnataka. Both teams started aggressively and missed chances in the first-half. Milagres Gonsalves'' right-footer sailed over the woodwork in Goa''s first opportunity while Punjab came close through Balraj Singh''s right footer but only to see it miss the target. But Lobo put the team ahead with a powerful rightfooter to the right of Punjab goalkeeper Paramjeet Singh. Lobo sealed the match in Goa''s favour scoring in the 90th minute before Branco Cardozo headed in a Nicolas Rodrigues flag-kick in the added time. Second consecutive defeat for Karnataka meant that they were out of the championship even as they have a match against Punjab left. (More) PTI TAP SUS SHN
