London, Aug 6(ANI): England captain Andrew Strauss has said that his team is becoming increasingly comfortable with the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS).
The system is being used in a Test series in England for the first time during the ongoing four-match series against Pakistan.
England had utilised the system in their favour during the Trent Bridge Test, where they thrashed Pakistan by 354 runs, and will now be hoping for a similar outcome in the second Test, starting at Edgbaston on Friday.
"It's still a challenge to know which ones to review and which not to. We reviewed one for Graeme Swann that was going down leg and didn't ask for one off Jimmy Anderson that was hitting leg. Everyone is getting more used to the system now," The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Strauss, as saying.
"The umpires don't seem to be taking offence if a decision is overturned and generally we're getting more decisions right on the back of it and that is a good thing," he added.
The 33-year-old further said that the non-striker had a key role in helping a team avoid speculative referrals that had little chance of success.
"There's always a part of you as a batsman that thinks it isn't out, but the guy at the other end has to be honest," Strauss said.You are not going to get every one right and there's still a reason for the top-order to use a review if it's fifty-fifty, more than the tail. But we're getting to grips with it and understand the mechanisms better," he added.
Earlier, Pakistan skipper Salman Butt had defended his side doing without the system during a batting collapse in the first Test, saying that the technology on offer was "not a hundred percent".
Pakistan were in the midst of a slump that saw them decline to 47 for six on the second day at Trent Bridge when Azhar Ali was given out caught behind for 14.
However, some replays indicated that he had failed to make contact.
"This technology, Hawkeye is not 100 percent and neither is Hotspot. When the ball hits the sticker on the side (edge of the bat) it doesn't leave a mark," Butt had said.
"If the batsman knows he has hit the ball there's no point taking a chance because if it's up there on the big screen it's pretty embarrassing. I think it was very honest of Azhar Ali, good sportsmanship. He edged it and he walked straight away," he added.
Under UDRS, both sides are allowed two unsuccessful challenges before they are barred from requesting a referral for the remainder of an innings.
However, in order not to delay the game, they must make it clear within a matter of seconds of the umpire's original verdict whether they wish to call on UDRS or not. (ANI)
