Mumbai, Apr 7 (PTI) Former champion Srikrishna Udupa of Karnataka crushed his 11th round opponent Swapnil Shah of Maharashtra in 22 moves to take the sole lead in the GTLF 11th National A Chess Championship for the Blind at the Andheri Sports Complex here today. The comprehensive win boosted Udupa''s points tally to 8.5, half a point ahead of Darpan Irani of Gujarat who drew with state rival Ashvin Makwana, with four rounds to go in the tournament. In a symmetrical queen pawn opening, Udupa expanded his central battle field by pushing his pawn to e4 square. His opponent Shah squandered his queen for a knight in return and resigned. Youngster Irani, playing against the French defence of Makwana, tried his best to break free of shackles created by a bad bishop but in vain. His knight appeared powerful but his opponent forced a draw on the 42nd move. In other matches, seasoned Maharashtra players - holder Rajesh Oza and Madan Bagyatkar - bounced back into the reckoning by humbling Akilesh Srivastava of Delhi and Darshan Patil of Gujarat respectively. The duo is sharing the fourth place with seven points each, the same as Tamil Nadu schoolboy T Sai Krishna who drew with Maharashtra''s Amit Deshpande after the 50th move.
