Udeshi shocks GM Hrair in Mayor''s Cup chess

Mumbai, Jun 4 (PTI) Mumbai youngster Aditya Udeshi surprised Grand Master Simonian Hrair of Armenia in 43 moves on the third day of the Rs 15 lakh Mumbai Mayor''s Cup International open chess tournament here today. Udeshi, with an inferior ELO rating of 2316, stunned his rival, rated 2521, with good knowledge of the Sicilian defence adopted by Hrair after opening with his king pawn to emerge a deserving winner at the Goregaon Sports Club. Playing aggressively, Udeshi sacrificed his knight on the 23rd move and lured Simonian to his doom. The latter had to exchange his bishop for the knight but could not salvage a draw. Young Karnataka giant-killer D Yashas (ELO 2204) beat GM Ruslan Pogorelov (ELO 2454) of Ukraine with white pieces by displaying good skills in the end game to force his rival to call it quits after 56 moves. Two other Indians laid low their more fancied rivals. Swayans Mishra (ELO 2397) defeated GM Alexander Fier (ELO 2581) of Brazil and B T Murali Krishnan (ELO 2412) got the better of GM Turov Maxim (ELO 2624) of Russia. Top seed GM Alexi Dreev (ELO 2655) of Russia subdued GM Temirbayev Serikbay (ELO 2455) of Kazakhstan but India''s main hope and tournament''s second seed GM Parimarjan Negi (ELO 2636) was held to a draw by compatriot, IM Himanshu Sharma.
