495 Indian sports persons to compete at CWG

New Delhi, Aug 25 (PTI) A huge contingent of 495 Indian athletes will compete for 829 medals at the upcoming Commonwealth Games, to be held from October 3-14 here. These sportspersons would be short-listed by the end of this month from 838 core probables, undergoing training at various SAI and Non-SAI centres. Core Indian probables, including 353, women in 17+1 (Para-Sports) disciplines have been training under the scheme "Preparations of Indian Teams for CWG 2010". A total number of 176 camps have been conducted till date and 150+ foreign visits/exposures have also been organised since August 2008. The government in June 2008 had approved, for the first-time ever in India, a scheme with an outlay of Rs 678 crore to prepare Indian sportspersons for the mega event. Initially, 1140 sportspersons from 17 disciplines were selected as core probables, and imparted intensive training. After evaluating outcomes of the training inputs, core probables were pruned down to 838.
