Chennai, Dec 1 (PTI) A total of 24 Formula 1600 CC cars would be in action on the grid in the MRF Formula Championship 2011 to be run as a support race for the inaugural Formula One Indian Grand Prix slated for October 29-30 at Jaypee International Race Circuit in Greater Noida. The races would be the seventh and eighth races of the MRF Formula Championship which has a total of eight events next year, six of which will be held in Chennai over two weekends (February 5-6 and 12-13). Arun Mammen, Managing Director of MRF told a press conference here that the company has built 12 formula cars in addition to the 12 raced earlier this year as single-make championship. Hire charges for a car is on offer at Rs 15 lakh a season on an ''arrive and drive'' basis and would cover the car rental, service, fuel, tyres and transport costs. Drivers confirming entry by Dec 20 would be given air tickets and accommodation. Entries close on December 31, he said. Tony Rodricks, GM (Advertising), MRF Ltd, said drivers would be allotted 30 minutes of timed practice on the Friday of the race weekend where the final two rounds in Noida would be challenging ones in terms of feel and experience that they would gain from the event, run as a Formula One support race. The cars, powered by Ford Duratec engines, have mainly imported parts like Hewland 5-speed sequential gearbox, Bilstein shocks and AP braking system. Indian mechanics would service the cars supervised by foreign engineers. Total prize-money is USD 100,000 with USD 50,000 for the winner, USD.30,000 for second place and USD.20,000 for third. The MRF Formula Championship 2011 is being organised by Madras Motor Sports Club in conformity with regulations prescribed by FIA (Federation Internationale de lAutomobile) and FMSCI (Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India).
