Scots more than satisfied with Commonwealth Games preparations

Published>Fri, Oct 01 10 12:22 PM

New Delhi, Oct. 1 (ANI): After the avalanche of bad publicity related to the XIXth Commonwealth Games, which nearly buried Delhi last week, the mood has taken a decisive swing in a positive direction, Scottish athletes feel.

While admitting that there have been inadequacies and frustrations, the underlying impression is of a city more exuberant and energetic than anyone would have expected based on the events of last week.

According to the Scotsman, there have been serious errors, but the worst of them may have been rectified just in time.

In the village, there are no dissenting voices now. Instead, members of Team Scotland, and their scottie-dog mascot, were relaxing there, mingling with other teams and with some of the thousands of dancers practising for Sunday's opening ceremony.

The Delhi organisers are not allowing anyone from the media into the athletes' accommodation itself, restricting us to the "international zone" which has been highly praised.

The very Scottish officials who were last week demanding rapid improvement are now happy about what has been done, at least in the village, and the athletes who were concerned about what they might find are relaxed and apparently content in their conditions.

Compared to the exalted standards set by Manchester in 2002 and Melbourne in 2006, these Games will look a little homespun and second-rate.

But it is not necessarily a bad thing if the Commonwealth Games, whose organisers like to call them the Friendly Games, stop aspiring to emulate the Olympics - as Melbourne in particular did - and revert instead to their old "Let's muck in and help each other out" tradition. (ANI)

Ageless Tendulkar is Ponting's inspiration

Published>Fri, Oct 01 10 12:06 PM

Chandigarh, Oct.1 (ANI): Sachin Tendulkar is inspiring Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting in his quest to kick-start a dominant phase two of his career.

The two giants of Test batting, sitting atop the all-time run-scorers list, are playing a game of their own; one defiantly holding the No.1 tag and his somewhat junior chaser taking hope from the longevity of his great rival.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Ponting is taking inspiration from the only man to have scored more Test runs and centuries.

"The fact that I'm 35, I know there's been a little bit made in the last couple of days about me being past my best, but we'll see, we'll see what this series holds and what the Ashes holds," Ponting said.

"I know that I'm probably feeling better about myself and my game than I have in long time. Having a long break gave me an opportunity to really sit back and think about what I needed to do to become a better player, that's all I can control."

"If you want to take a look at anyone to take something from, you look at Sachin and what he's done in the 12 months, he's made six Test match hundreds in the last 12 months and he's 37.

"I'd like to think I'm not over the hill yet if someone like Sachin can keep scoring those runs."

He added: "I honestly haven't thought if this will be that last tour [to India] for me, retirement is the furthest thing from my mind. (ANI)

Oz Sports Minister gets taste of tight security at CWG Village

Fri, Oct 01 10 11:56 AM

New Delhi, Oct 1 (PTI) With tight security in place at the Commonwealth Games Village even Australian Sports Minister Mark Arbib could not enter there in his official vehicle as it did not have the necessary accreditation and had to walk to the residential complex of his country''s athletes. Arbib arrived at the Village this morning to meet his country''s athletes and officials but was denied entry from Gate No 2 as his vehicle didn''t have the necessary accreditation for entering the complex. Arbib had to walk to the residential block of Aussie athletes that too after being apparently frisked by the security staff. "He was frisked but the security is so tight here that it cannot be helped," said an official.

Kiwi chef de mission backs Delhi CWG security measures

Published>Fri, Oct 01 10 11:44 AM

New Delhi, Oct 1(ANI): New Zealand's Commonwealth Games team boss Dave Currie has backed the Organising Committee's decision to prevent Kiwi athletes from leaving their secure athletes' village to explore New Delhi.

The Delhi Commonwealth Games Organising Committee had made the decision in the interest of athletes' safety.

"I know we've got some intrepid travellers in the party who kind of want to get out and see stuff. My hope, really, is that they understand the collective responsibility that we have for one another and that if something happens to someone it's not just the individual who is affected," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Currie, as saying.

"It affects the whole team. We are here to compete and perform. We aren't here as tourists. We are creating the high performance environment and they are high performance athletes who are here in Delhi to compete."

"My sense is that they don't want to do anything that will get in the way of that," he added.

Currie also revealed that one rival country's chef de mission believes that the extensive bag and body searches carried out outside athletes' village and venues are "too obtrusive".

"The security checks are thorough to the point where some of my colleagues are not comfortable with them. They believe it's a tad intrusive. The chef de mission who said that will remain nameless," Currie said.

"It was brought up at the meeting this morning and he felt it was something he wasn't used to having parts of his body patted that haven't been patted of late. He was very delicate about it."

"Look, the sense is that everybody was concerned about security so the Indians are making sure that not on their watch will anything happen. In my view, we've found that it's been really thorough," he added. (ANI)

Kiwi tennis player Ellen Barry pulls out of CWG

Fri, Oct 01 10 11:26 AM

Wellington, Oct 1 (PTI) The fortified Games village in New Delhi failed to gain the confidence of New Zealand tennis player Ellen Barry as she became the latest to pull out of the Commonwealth Games citing security concerns. The 21-year-old was supposed to pair up with Marina Erakovic in the women''s doubles but pulled out at the last minute saying she fears the security arrangements. "It all happened in the last 24-36 hours while everything else was on," New Zealand chef de mission Dave Currie was quoted as saying in the New Zealand Herald. "It will impact on Marina''s doubles hopes. She is also going to be a day later, she is due tomorrow (Friday)," he added. Ellen is only the second athlete after cyclist Greg Henderson to pull out of the originally selected team of 193 because of security fears. "Most people have trusted our judgement, given the length of time we''ve been doing it. "It weighs heavily on us that we make the right decision and we''ve been grateful for that support from most sports. We''ve appreciated the faith we''ll make the right call. However, there will be no recriminations," said Currie Barry and Henderson didn''t approach the NZOC to gain knowledge about what exactly is going in New Delhi. "Nobody rings you up," Currie said. Cyclist Adam Stewart was another athlete who was forced to skip the Games after he was suspended for the attempted use of the banned substances EPO and HCG.

PCB''s poor management to blame for spot-fixing scandal: Akram

Fri, Oct 01 10 11:16 AM

Karachi, Oct 1 (PTI) Former captains Wasim Akram and Ramiz Raja have blamed the Pakistan Cricket Board''s poor management for the spot-fixing scandal that surrounded the team during its tour of England. Akram said clearly there was lack of leadership in the Pakistan Cricket Board and he would not blame the players for the mess they find themselves in. "I don''t see lack of leadership in the national team but in the cricket board," he said. He pointed out that knowing how tough a tour to England was, the board should have been prepared for any eventuality and told the team management to be ready for such a situation. Akram, however, praised ODI and Twenty20 skipper Shahid Afridi and said he had proven himself to be a good leader by picking up the team in very trying circumstances. "He picked up the team''s morale when the English media was after us and he did a good job of it," Akram said. Raja also said that whenever Pakistan toured England, there were controversies created by the media and the board and team management should have educated the players about how to be prepared for such situations. "Unfortunately the opponents of Pakistan cricket had been waiting for a long time for a controversy like spot-fixing to come about and they are now taking full advantage of it in trying to damage our cricket," Raja said. He also praised Shahid Afridi for improving the dressing room atmosphere and lifting the team to do its best for the country in very difficult circumstances. Former captain and senior batsman Younus Khan said the western media wanted to give the impression that the future of Pakistan cricket was very bleak and dark. "They don''t realise this but Pakistan cricket''s future is bright but the board also has to take steps to ensure that people don''t lose interest in the sport like it has happened with other sports," he said. Fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, meanwhile, expressed confidence in the leadership of Afridi pointing out that he had taken charge and managed the team like the head of a family. "It was not an easy task for him but he managed it well. He also encouraged me to play in the last two one-day matches despite me suffering from a side strain," he said.

6 months after marriage, Asif brings wife home

Fri, Oct 01 10 10:52 AM

Lahore, Oct 1 (PTI) Six months after he got married, suspended Pakistan pacer Mohammad Asif, who is implicated in the spot-fixing scandal, has finally brought his wife home. The bride, Sana Hilal, and Asif''s ''rukhsati'' ceremony took place six months after their ''nikah'' due to the pacer''s commitments with the Pakistan team. "It is a relief to finally bring my wife home. We have waited for a while now to be together as I have been busy on foreign tours with the team," Asif told the media at the wedding reception. The colorful reception in the posh defence area was attended by a large number of Asif''s teammates including Salman Butt, Mohammad Hafeez, Kamran Akmal, Umar Akmal, Misbah-ul-Haq and some former players and officials. Ironically, both Asif and Butt are serving a provisional suspension imposed on them by the ICC for their alleged involvement in spot-fixing. Asif entered into Nikah with Sana after breaking up with actress and model Veena Malik after a much publicised affair which ended in acrimony with both going to court against each other over a monetary dispute earlier this year. Asif said he hoped that his wife would bring him good luck and change his life and cricket career for the better. "I am feeling happy that finally I can settle down to married life. It was a marriage of my own will," he said. PTI COR PM

Hooper should share blame for messy CWG preparation: McCully

Fri, Oct 01 10 10:26 AM

Wellington, Oct 1 (PTI) Commonwealth Games Federation CEO Mike Hooper should share the blame for the messy build up to the October 3-14 mega-event in Delhi, feels New Zealand Sports Minister Murray McCully. McCully said Hooper and the CWF will have a lot to answer for after the Games are over in Delhi. "We should be careful about simply asserting that Indian officials carry all the responsibility," Mr McCully was quoted as saying in the website ''stuff.co.nz''. "He''s been based there to oversee those arrangements. I certainly think there''s going to be a sharing of responsibility, but this is not the time. Let''s let them do their jobs and leave the serious questions for afterwards. But they should be asked," he added. Hooper has been in the eye of a storm after his disparaging remarks about India''s population and for putting the blame on the Indian government for the messy preparation of the Commonwealth Games. Upset at his remark, a coalition of more than 20 groups calling itself the "Anti-Commonwealth Games Front" yesterday protested at the Jantar Mantar and demanded boycott of the October 3-14 event and Queen''s Baton Relay. On Wednesday, activists from the "Rashtrawadi Sena", a hardline Hindu group, burnt the effigy of Hooper outside the OC office and held signs saying "Racist Hooper Go Back", "Shame On Michael Hooper" and "Hooper insulted our nation: Hooper go back".

Sidelined Younus opens photo studio to use time ''productively''

Fri, Oct 01 10 10:06 AM

Karachi, Oct 1 (PTI) Fed up of being ignored by the Pakistan Cricket Board and the national selectors, out of favour former captain Younus Khan has opened a photo studio to use his time away from the game "productively". Younus who has not been selected to play for Pakistan since the one-day series in Australia in February has taken over a photo-shop business in Steel town in Karachi where he resides these days. "Yes I have started this photo-shop business. It is called Bambino photo studio It allows me to divert my mind and spend my time productively," Younus said. "A close friend first had the shop and was going away after which I took it over and I am now rebuilding the studio and starting the business afresh. It has attracted me because photography has always fascinated me and it is a good business venture," the former captain said. Younus also said he was continuing his hobby of fishing regularly but he made it clear he had not given up hope of playing for Pakistan again. "The domestic season is starting soon and I will be playing for my team and hopefully get back into match form as I continue my training all the time. Whenever Pakistan requires my services I am always available for the team," Younus said. He declined to comment on the reasons for the Pakistan Cricket Board refusing to consider him for selection.

I''ve lost the desire to play Test cricket: Afridi

Fri, Oct 01 10 09:56 AM

Karachi, Oct 1 (PTI) Pakistan''s ODI and Twenty20 skipper Shahid Afridi says he has no intentions of going back on his "emotional" decision to retire from Test cricket as he has lost the desire to play the longer format of the game. "I have no real desire to play Test cricket and the reason I lost this desire was because I was not selected consistently for Test matches," Afridi said. "As it is I have a busy schedule and I don''t think I have the time for Test matches," he added. Afridi said before going public with his decision after the first Test against England, he had informed his successor Salman Butt and coach Waqar Younis. The flamboyant all-rounder also made it clear that he and other senior players including Muhammad Yousuf, Abdul Razzaq and Shoaib Akhtar had discussed the future and were keen to put the national team on the right track in the next two or three years before retiring. "We want to retire after making a strong team and leaving behind a legacy of some good players," he said. Afridi also disclosed while he was Test captain, he had told the team management in England to instruct the players to stay away from brothers, Mazhar and Azhar Majeed, whose names cropped up in a spot-fixing scandal which led to the suspension of three Pakistani cricketers. "These brothers were agents for some of our players but what I didn''t like was them coming to the hotel rooms. I told the manager about this and he also made it clear to the players under no circumstances should their agents be in the rooms or near the dressing room," he said. "Unfortunately after I returned home I don''t know what happened but I had a fear that these two brothers would get our players into trouble. I don''t blame the team management because they can only warn or instruct the players to a certain extent. They can''t stop the players from going out with their agents for dinner or receptions." .

Mickelson poised to launch 38th Ryder Cup on Friday

Published>Fri, Oct 01 10 09:52 AM

Phil Mickelson is set to fire the first shot in anger at the Ryder Cup later on Friday when the United States begin the defence of their trophy at Celtic Manor.

The world number two will partner rookie Dustin Johnson in the opening fourballs against Europe's Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer as the talking stops and the action begins in the 38th edition of the biennial team event.

"We wanted to get off early, we enjoy playing first," Mickelson, appearing at his eighth Ryder Cup, told reporters after captains Colin Montgomerie and Corey Pavin revealed their combinations at Thursday's opening ceremony.

Rory McIlroy, Europe's youngest team member this week, begins his Ryder Cup career with fellow Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell against Stewart Cink and Matt Kuchar.

Most eyes will be on Tiger Woods as the world number one, who needed a pick from Pavin after a poor year by his high standards, partners Steve Stricker against Europeans Ian Poulter and Ross Fisher on the Twenty Ten course.

The fourth match features Luke Donald and Padraig Harrington against American rookies Bubba Watson and Jeff Overton. Heavy rain and winds are expected early on Friday before an improvement ahead of the afternoon foursomes.

India has never supported Pakistan cricket: Afridi

Fri, Oct 01 10 09:36 AM

Karachi, Oct 1 (PTI) The Pakistan Cricket Board should stop relying on India or any other Asian nation for support and become self reliant in solving its problems, says the national team''s ODI and Twenty20 skipper Shahid Afridi. Asked about the continued absence of the Pakistani national Twenty20 champions from the lucrative Champions League, the second edition of which concluded last week in Johannesburg, Afridi said India has never been supportive of Pakistan cricket. "Leave alone the Champions League, tell me when has India ever supported Pakistan cricket?" Afridi told ''Geo Channel''. "The truth is we have always been there to support India, Sri Lanka or Bangladesh but when time came for them to support us, they left us isolated. "The truth is it is time we realised that not only India or Sri Lanka, Pakistan does not have many friends internationally and it is time we learnt to become self reliant and find solutions to problems ourselves," he added. Afridi''s comments echoed that of former team manager Yawar Saeed, who had on returning from London this week stated that Pakistan cricket had few friends in the world. Yawar had criticised the ICC for its handling of the spot fixing issue and pointed out that sadly Pakistan cricket was getting little support internationally.

Atwal shares lead at Viking Classic

Fri, Oct 01 10 08:56 AM

Madison (USA), Oct 1 (PTI) Making his first PGA Tour start since winning the Wyndham Championship a month ago, Arjun Atwal continued his brilliant form to share the lead with a six-under 66 in the opening round of the USD 3.6 million Viking Classic golf tournament here. Atwal shared the top spot with Bill Lunde, Ken Duke, Brett Quigley in a crowded leader-board. "I''ve never played in conditions like this. I''ve always played when it''s softer. But it''s playing perfect, it''s firm. It''s just the way it''s supposed to be played," said Atwal, who won the Wyndham Championship in August. The 10th tee starter began steadily and parred the first seven holes before closing his first-nine with back-to-back birdies on the 17th and 18th. The front-nine turned out to be even better as Atwal struck five birdies against a lone bogey to round off his eighth card in the 60s in his last nine rounds, dating to an opening-round 68 at The Greenbrier Classic. Atwal has now led or shared the lead in his last five rounds on the Tour, all four of them at Wyndham. This is the fourth first-round lead/co-lead of his career, and the third of the season. Atwal made his 11th start of the year, with top-10 finishes at the Wyndham Championship and the HP Byron Nelson Championship (tied seventh). He is 64th on the Tour money list.

Now showing at Delhi: Bolt II

Published>Fri, Oct 01 10 06:18 AM

While Team Jamaica grooved to the music, clicked photos, exchanged hugs and soaked in the atmosphere at the official welcome, three athletes preferred to watch the impromptu party unfold from a distance. It wasn't some ingrained aloofness that made Ramone McKenzie, Oshane Bailey and Rasheed Dwyer reluctant to mix with their teammates. Actually, it was their weary legs, those that sprint 100 and 200 metres, that forced them to stay away from the crowd.

National 100-metre champion Bailey, McKenzie along with Lerone Clarke were put through the paces, in the morning and the evening by their coaches; sessions that will be the routine till the eve of their finals at the Games. Dwyer, meanwhile, is the top 200-metre sprinter. Since winning the gold here might mean getting the 'the next big thing' tag, no one is taking any chances.

Four years ago at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games Asafa Powell, then 24, won the 100 metres final. He stayed at the top till countryman Usain Bolt came along as the next ambassador of speed.

Jamaica's six sprinters, including three in the 200, are expected to fill the big shoes of Powell and the Bolt after these stars fade out. These Under-23 sprinters are the finest of the next generation emerging from this Caribbean powerhouse of sprinting. The absence of their big names at the Games presents an opportunity for these youngsters to make a name for themselves at a world event. If they fail, back home there is a well-oiled production line ready to churn out a replacement.

"Talent, training and tradition," Desmon Brown, Jamaica's Chef-de-Mission says is what has made Jamaica a spiriting powerhouse. "We are good in other track and field events too but understandably we are most famous for producing sprinters. Our netball team are world beaters and football is big, but hardly anyone talks about them," Brown said.

Sprinting has dominated the minds of budding athletes in Jamaica.

"We have a tradition of spiriting, starting from Herb McKenley (400 metres world-record holder; 1948) but we have not allowed our talent to go waste. The GC College of Physical Education and Sports in Spanish Town is a centre of excellence which produces world-class coaches who in-turn mould raw talent. The secondary annual sports competition is 100 years old today and draws the largest number of athletes in the world at a single school meet," Brown said trying to dispel the belief that Asafa and Bolt just sprung out of the blue and became world champions.

"I would say that Asafa and Bolt are products of the system back home. The boys here are the next generation of sprinters. You note down their names and mark my words. One of these sprinters will become the next Powell or Bolt," the Chef-de-Mission added. Being a national champion is a ticket to scholarships, fame, sponsorships and stardom.

Clarke, Dailey and McKenzie have perhaps faced the stiffest competition at home before being picked to the Jamaica squad. Kirkland Douglas, one of the head coaches, explained why. "In January-February we have selection trails every weekend. It can take an hour to pick the finalists in the field events and a couple of hours for the finalists to emerge in the middle-distance events. But the 100 and 200 metres is the most popular and we can have up to 20-25 heats a day. That is why the guys here are the best. Our national school record is 10.17, so anything below that is not considered good enough really," Douglas said.

For the likes of Bailey a gold is not good enough. When you sprint for Jamaica that you have to win is a given, the sprinters say in one voice. Since Bolt cantered across the finish line, faster than any man had before him, in Beijing, these young Jamaicans have been trained to only have the world record in their sights.

Napoli in dramatic fightback, Atletico held

Published>Fri, Oct 01 10 04:56 AM

Napoli recovered from three goals down to draw 3-3 at Steaua Bucharest in the Europa League on Thursday as holders Atletico Madrid were held 1-1 by Bayer Leverkusen.

Juventus drew 1-1 at Manchester City and Italian teams, who failed to win in the opening round of games, produced a much better performance with Sampdoria and Palermo also claiming 1-0 home victories.

Porto maintained their 100 percent record, sealing a 10th successive win by beating CSKA Sofia 1-0 away and Liverpool were held to a goalless draw at Utrecht.

Moldova's Sheriff Tiraspol provided the night's biggest upset with a 2-0 win over Ukraine's Dynamo Kiev, helped by a bizarre opening goal, and Sporting Lisbon got the biggest win with a 5-0 demolition of Levski Sofia.

Napoli made a disastrous start in Romania, falling 3-0 behind in only 16 minutes as Cristian Tanase, with a free kick, and Pantelis Kapetanos added to a second-minute own goal by Emilson Cribani, who deflected a shot into the net.

But former European champions Steaua, in their first match under new coach Marius Lacatus, collapsed after Kapetanos was sent off in the 31st minute following a clash with Fabiano Santacroce.

Luigi Vitali pulled one back just before the break and Steaua twice hit the woodwork before substitute Marek Hamsik reduced the arrears in the 73rd.

Napoli's Uruguay forward Edinson Cavani completed the fightback by snatching the equaliser in the eighth minute of stoppage time to give the Italian side their second draw in two Group K games.

Liverpool lead the group with four points after an uninspiring draw at Utrecht who have been involved in two goalless stalemates after their opening draw at Napoli.

FIRST POINT

Atletico, beaten by Aris Salonika in their first Group B game, fell behind to a goal from Swiss striker Eren Derdiyok six minutes before halftime at home to erratic Germans Bayer Leverkusen.

Simao Sabrosa converted a penalty after the break to give Atletico their first point of the group, but the Spaniards are still bottom while Bayer lead with four points.

Juventus, amazingly held 3-3 at home by Poland's Lech Poznan, took an early lead at Manchester City when Vincenzo Iaquinta cut inside from the left and scored with a shot which clipped Kolo Toure's head and flew past Joe Hart.

Adam Johnson levelled before halftime in the Group A match when he slotted home Yaya Toure's pass. Juve nearly snatched the points when Alessandro del Piero's free kick hit the underside of the crossbar five minutes from time.

Lech Poznan went top of the group, ahead of Manchester City on goals scored, with a 2-0 win over hapless Austrian champions Salzburg, thanks to second-half goals from Manuel Arboleda and Slawomir Peszko. Poznan and City each have four points.

Porto's Colombia forward Radamel Falcao scored the only goal, flicking the ball in from Hulk's pass, to give the Portuguese side three points and keep them top of Group L.

Sampdoria's Giampaolo Pazzini scored from the spot as they beat visitors Debrecen 1-0 in Group I to claim the first win for an Italian team in this season's competition, while PSV Eindhoven won 2-0 at Metalist Kharkiv in the same group.

Italy's Palermo also won but it was far from convincing as they needed a goal from Giulio Migliaccio in the 79th minute to beat Swiss second division outfit Lausanne Sport.

Pavin's Americans face daunting Cup challenge

Published>Fri, Oct 01 10 02:16 AM

After three days of practice the 38th Ryder Cup is set to start at a damp Celtic Manor where holders the United States face an uphill task as they bid to win on European soil for the first time in 17 years.

Under the captaincy of Colin Montgomerie, Europe field one of their strongest teams and have extra motivation this year after losing the trophy to the Americans at Valhalla in 2008.

The Europeans also have home advantage, although Montgomerie has opted not to 'trick up' the Twenty Ten course in the way that other Ryder Cup captains have in the past.

"I haven't played around with the golf course at all," the 47-year-old Scot told reporters in the build-up to Friday morning's opening fourball matches.

"This golf course is set up in a very, very fair manner to allow the best team to win."

His U.S. counterpart Pavin agreed.

"It's set up very fairly," the 50-year-old American said. "It's going to reward good play, and shots that are off the fairway in this rough, you're going to be penalised.

"It kind of reminds me a lot of the way the U.S. PGA Championship is set up. It's very fair. How you play is what you're going to get out of it."

THICK ROUGH

The biggest factor is likely to be the damp, tangly rough at Celtic Manor, which American world number five Jim Furyk says is the thickest and longest he has ever seen.

"It's as difficult as I've ever seen in my career," the 2003 U.S. Open champion said. "Length (off the tee) is great, but if you can't put it in play here, it's not so good.

"But the fairways are amply wide. They are big enough, but you sure don't want to miss one."

Fans are in for a treat when the opening fourball matches get underway on Friday morning, once the forecast fog lifts.

British world number three Lee Westwood and U.S. PGA champion Martin Kaymer will take on second-ranked Phil Mickelson and big-hitting Dustin Johnson in a mouth-watering opening encounter.

The first tee at Celtic Manor is flanked by grandstands that can accommodate 2,000 spectators and the atmosphere will be electric when the first group sets off.

"It will be a great game and the atmosphere on the first tee will be remarkable," Montgomerie said.

World number one Tiger Woods, after a mediocre year by his standards, has been held back until the third match when he and Steve Stricker will take on Britain's Ian Poulter and Ross Fisher.

SENSATIONAL ROAR

"Tiger and Stricker -- if ever there was a match you are going to want to play in, it is against their best two players," Poulter said. "The roar on that first tee will be sensational.

Northern Irishmen Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell, a widely expected partnership, come up against former British Open champion Stewart Cink and Matt Kuchar in the second match.

In the final fourball, Britain's Luke Donald and Irishman Padraig Harrington take on U.S. rookies Bubba Watson and Jeff Overton.

Pavin accepts his team face a daunting task in their bid to land Ryder Cup honours in Europe for the time since 1993, when he was on the American team.

"It's a different story playing overseas," he said. "The teams themselves are very comparable but, given the advantage of playing in Europe, that gives the edge to the Europeans," he said.

Irishman Padraig Harrington, playing in his sixth Ryder Cup this week, agreed.

"The teams are so evenly balanced that a lot is going to come down to the quality of the decisions from the captain," the three-times major winner said.

"The decisions he makes in regard to partnerships, who to play, who to drop, when to rest guys, that's going to be crucial to how the team performs."

Tour of Spain runner-up Mosquera tests positive

Published>Fri, Oct 01 10 01:16 AM

Tour of Spain runner-up Ezequiel Mosquera and fellow Spaniard David Garcia Da Pena have tested positive for a banned substance, the International Cycling Union (UCI) said on Thursday.

The two men, who are Xacobeo team mates, tested positive for hydroxyethyl starch, the UCI said.

"Earlier today, the UCI advised Spanish riders David Garcia Da Pena and Ezequiel Mosquera of their Adverse Analytical Findings (presence of hydroxyethyl starch based on reports from the WADA accredited laboratory in Cologne) in the urine samples collected from them at an in-competition test at the Vuelta (Tour of Spain) on 16 Sept. 2010," the statement said.

Hydroxyethyl starch is a plasma substitute that increases blood volume, allowing red cells to continue to deliver oxygen to the body which improves performance.

Mosquera, who could face a two-year ban, told a news conference: "It's a situation that the national bodies need to sort out. In any case, it will be a minor punishment or a warning.

"We will have to try to clear up the issue in the next few days. My conscience is clear. I don't feel guilty."

The new scandal erupted after the UCI said earlier on Thursday that Tour de France champion Alberto Contador of Spain had failed a dope test in this year's race.

"Mr. David Garcia Da Pena and Ezequiel Mosquera have the right to request and attend the analyses of their B samples," the UCI added.

Mosquera, who lost out to Italian Vincenzo Nibali in the Spanish race earlier this month, had just agreed on a two-year deal with Dutch team Vacansoleil.

"The rider from Galicia recently signed an agreement with the Vacansoleil Pro Cycling Team for 2011 and 2012," Vacansoleil said in a statement.

"Vacansoleil has strict anti-doping rules and Mosquera is aware of these. The contract with Mosquera would become valid as from the 1st January 2011. This contract is now up for discussion."

Team manager Daan Luijkx said: "I'm unpleasantly surprised. We have a zero tolerance policy in accordance with anti doping regulations, but first all facts need to be clear to us."

World Cup signal jammed from Jordan - Al Jazeera

Fri, Oct 01 10 12:56 AM

Jamming of Al Jazeera's coverage of the World Cup soccer finals in June originated in Jordan, the Qatar-based broadcaster said on Thursday.

Al Jazeera, which had exclusive rights from world soccer's governing body FIFA to broadcast the tournament in the Middle East and North Africa, suffered disruption to some matches, including the opener between hosts South Africa and Mexico.

"Al Jazeera confirms that the source of the disturbance on its sports channel during the World Cup came from Jordan," the Arabic language channel said.

An official Jordanian source denied the claim when contacted by Reuters.

"These accusations are untrue and not acceptable and the Jordanian government is ready to cooperate with any impartial team of experts to examine the facts and it is confident the results will show the baseless nature of these accusations," the source said.

Egypt and Al Jazeera clashed over the interference during the tournament after the channel alleged an Egyptian-managed satellite service carrying the signal was deliberately sabotaged.

Egypt denied any involvement in the jamming and called for an independent body to investigate.

In-form Furyk left out of first Ryder Cup session

Published>Fri, Oct 01 10 12:36 AM

United States captain Corey Pavin sprang a surprise when he omitted in-form Jim Furyk for Friday's opening fourball matches at the 38th Ryder Cup.

World number five Furyk, a veteran of six previous Ryder Cups and one of the steadiest players in the game, clinched Tour Championship and FedExCup honours in Atlanta on Sunday and was a possible partner for Tiger Woods.

Pavin instead opted to send out world number one Woods with fourth-ranked Steve Stricker for the Cup holders in the third match of the day against Britain's Ian Poulter and Ross Fisher.

"He (Furyk) said he's been tired," Pavin told reporters before adding with a smile, "He was counting the money and he's been very tired.

"You'll see him out in the afternoon (for the foursomes)."

Woods, who has struggled for form this year and failed to qualify automatically for the U.S. team, gelled superbly with Stricker at the 2009 Presidents Cup where they were unbeaten in four matches.

"I thought it was a good slot for them so I put them there," Pavin said of his choice of Woods and Stricker for the third match.

Asked how Woods had reacted when told he would not play in the first match of an opening Ryder Cup session since Brookline in 1999, Pavin replied: "He's fine.

"He's been saying the same thing to me since I asked him if he wanted to play on the team as a (wildcard) pick. He just said: "Whatever you want me to do, I'll do'."

Pavin's counterpart Colin Montgomerie was surprised by the world number one's position in the fourball order.

"I was expecting Tiger to go first or fourth," the Scot said. "Tiger, being hidden, is a different move. But, as we all know, every point is important wherever it might be."

MOUTH-WATERING ENCOUNTER

In Friday's opening game, world number two Phil Mickelson and big-hitting Dustin Johnson will take on Britain's Lee Westwood and Germany's Martin Kaymer in a mouth-watering encounter.

Four-times major winner Mickelson and rookie Johnson are birdie machines while world number three Westwood has been arguably the most consistent player in the game over the last 18 months.

Sixth-ranked Kaymer, one of six rookies in the European team, clinched his first major title at last month's U.S. PGA Championship.

"It will be a great game," Montgomerie said after the pairings were announced during the opening ceremony at Celtic Manor.

"The atmosphere on the first tee will be remarkable. I have put out reasonable strength to start with."

Northern Irishmen Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell, a widely expected partnership, will take on Stewart Cink and Matt Kuchar in the second match.

In the final fourball, Britain's Luke Donald and Irishman Padraig Harrington take on U.S. rookies Bubba Watson and Jeff Overton, another surprise move by Pavin according to Montgomerie.

"I did not expect Luke Donald and Padraig Harrington to be playing two rookies in the last game, which is an important game," the European captain said.

Pavin defended his decision, saying he wanted to send the two rookies off last after witnessing the atmosphere of the earlier matches.

"Those guys are so excited to get out there and play," he said. "I wanted then to see and experience some things that were happening with the first few matches.

"I felt like if I waited to play them that they would probably go crazy waiting."

The U.S. won the Ryder Cup for the first time in nine years with a 16-1/2 to 11-1/2 victory over Europe at Valhalla in 2008 under the captaincy of Paul Azinger.

Montgomerie's powerful team, however, are widely viewed as favourites for the 38th edition with the Americans not having won the trophy on foreign soil since 1993.

West Ham formally lodge bid for 2012 Olympic stadium

Fri, Oct 01 10 12:18 AM

West Ham United formally submitted their bid on Thursday to take over the 2012 London Olympic stadium after the Games.

Players Scott Parker, Carlton Cole and Mark Noble travelled to the Prime Minister's residence in Downing Street to present a joint bid with the London Borough of Newham to run the 516 million-pound ($818 million) stadium.

The east London Premier League club plans to reduce the capacity of the stadium, capable of hosting both football and athletics as well as concerts, from a capacity of 80,000 to 60,000 seats.

The Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) had set an end of September deadline for bids from those wishing to lease the stadium.

"We believe this is the only bid that can deliver London's legacy commitment to the International Olympic Committee," said West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady on the club's website (www.whufc.com).

"The last thing anyone wants is for the Olympic stadium to become a ghost of Olympics past. The only realistic solution is to make the stadium work for a Premier League football team and that should be West Ham United."

The club and Newham say their bid, which would retain most of the stadium structure, would also bring wider benefits for the local community, with a proposal to incorporate an Olympic visitor centre and football museum.

The club's current Upton Park ground would become part of a regeneration scheme to include new houses, shops and other facilities.

"Our plans will deliver upwards of two million visitors each year and provide a significant beacon in the East End that will fulfil the original London 2012 bid commitments," Newham mayor Robin Wales said.

Bagan beat Dempo in tie-breaker, cruise into Fed Cup final

Thu, Sep 30 10 10:56 PM

Cuttack, Sep 30 (PTI) Thirteen time champions Mohun Bagan sailed into the final of 32nd Federation Cup, beating Dempo SC 6-5 via tie-breaker to set up a summit clash with traditional rivals East Bengal on October 2. In a pulsating match at the floodlit Barabati Stadium here, the Goans dished out an attacking brand of soccer from the word go with Nigerian striker Ranti Martins scoring the goal as early as in the second minute of the match. The winners were trailing 0-1 at the break. Bagan struggled to match the class of Dempo and could equalise in the 66th minute when Edeh Chidi converted a spot kick after a foul on him on the line of the box. After that both the teams fought for supremacy and remained 1-1 in the stipulated time taking the match to the extra time which also did not yield any result. In the tie-breaker, Bagan capitalised all goals while Dempo''s Kalu N Ogba failed to place the ball as jubilation followed in the Bagan camp. The heroes of the all crucial match for Bagan were their custodians Shilton Paul and Sangram Mukherjee. While Paul thwarted the repeated onslaughts by rival forwards during the stipulated time, Mukherjee neatly collected the ball as Ogba took the shot, thus stopping Dempo from scoring the all important goal which turned out to be the clincher. .

India series good preparation for Ashes: Nielsen

Thu, Sep 30 10 10:36 PM

Dubai, Sep 30 (PTI) India is always considered a tough opponent inside the sub-continent and visiting Australia coach Tim Nielsen feels the Test series, commencing tomorrow, would be a nice preparation for the high-octane Ashes series later this year. "I think this series is a good preparation for us ahead of the Ashes. We''re playing in two great venues in Mohali and Bangalore where the wickets aren''t traditional from the first ball that is bowled," Nielsen said. "Certainly Mohali will offer a bit more bounce and carry on the first days and we enjoy playing in Bangalore. It''s good to come off a break and into these games and looking ahead to where we''re going in the next few months which are important," Nielsen told ICC Cricket World audio show. Nielsen also hoped that the India Test series, starting from tomorrow in Mohali, would be keenly contested one. "We''re looking forward to the challenge of facing the number one team in the world. I think the number one ranking is something every team would like to achieve it would be a nice acknowledgement of our form if we can rise up the Test match rankings list but one step at the time," he said. Meanwhile, South Africa women''s captain Cri-Zelda Brits said they are looking ahead to upcoming six-team ICC Cricket Challenge that will see the teams ranked fifth to 10th in the world play in an ODI and Twenty20 tournament. "We''re really looking forward to the event especially as it''s like a home series for us. We''re very excited about the event as it''s the first time we''ll be competing in an event like this and it''s a good thing for us to measure ourselves as the lower-ranked sides against the top four teams in the world. "We''re all in high spirits and looking forward to hosting the five teams here," she said.

Davies says 13th man Cup role will drive him on for 2012

Published>Thu, Sep 30 10 09:46 PM

Welsh number one Rhys Davies required driving skills of a different nature on Thursday as he weaved his Europe-emblazoned golf cart through the crowds massed behind the 17th green at Celtic Manor.

The 25-year-old caused quite a stir as Ryder Cup fever went up a notch in the Usk Valley even though, unless something quite dramatic happens before dawn on Friday, he will not hit a ball in anger during the 38th edition of the biennial match.

Davies looked poised for an automatic place in Europe captain Colin Montgomerie's team earlier this year when he was runner-up at the Wales Open at Celtic Manor after posting several other top-10 finishes, but a disappointing late run dropped him out of the reckoning.

As Europe's unofficial 13th player, however, Davies still has a role to play and he hopes the experience of being with the team will inspire him to qualify in 2012.

"It's been great to see everything close up," Davies, who claimed his first European Tour title this year in Morocco, told Reuters while scribbling his signature on baseball caps being thrust towards him by excited children.

"It's a totally different atmosphere, something incredibly unique really, and it's making me hungry to be involved in the next one. It's totally new for me and it's a huge honour to be involved and asked by Colin to be here."

Davies need only look at Germany's Martin Kaymer for encouragement. Kaymer performed a similar look-and-learn role at Valhalla two years ago and has since become one of Europe's top players, winning the U.S. PGA Championship this year.

With slight doubts about Lee Westwood's troublesome calf and Sweden's Peter Hanson suffering with illness, Davies arrived at Celtic Manor with a glimmer of hope that he could get an emergency call from Montgomerie.

RUNNING ERRANDS

Now that possibility has disappeared Davies, who set the course record of 62 at Celtic Manor, was simply happy to run errands for Montgomerie and enjoy the team spirit.

"Yeah, it has been a bit strange," he said. "The first two days here I just wanted to play to be honest, it was really tough. I still really want to play but now I realise that the team is so important and I'll do anything I can to help.

"It has been a real eye-opener. Seeing these guys that are normally individuals all pulling together is amazing and I do feel part of it.

"I've been doing a lot of driving on the buggy. Colin has been really great to be around and I'm trying to help him wherever I can. He has got so many commitments, more than many people realised, certainly more than I realised."

Davies said he was glad Westwood and Hanson were both fit.

"In truth I knew they would be okay," he said. "I never really thought I would be playing. They've played their way on the team and they deserve it and it's good to see Lee fit and Pete healthy. They are both great players."

Davies said the mood in the team was one of expectation and eagerness to get started.

"Everyone is fit and they can't wait to get out there," he added. "This is so different to what I'm used to and even though I'm not playing I'll be out there cheering with the fans. Hopefully I can be on the team on merit in two years."

Butt cannot afford to react emotionally: Sohail

Thu, Sep 30 10 09:36 PM

Karachi, Sep 30 (PTI) Denounced by almost the entire cricketing fraternity in Pakistan, PCB chief Ijaz Butt today found support in former Test skipper Aamir Sohail who lauded Butt''s decision to withdraw charges of match-fixing against the English cricketers. "I don''t think Butt has taken a U-turn. He changed his mind which is a good thing because the ramifications of a dispute between the ECB and PCB would have been bad for Pakistan cricket," Sohail, who resigned from a senior post in the board due to differences with Butt last year, said. Sohail said that Butt should now realise that he was holding an important position and cannot afford to react emotionally. "I hope in future he is more careful and sensible with his comments. It is a good thing that this crisis has been diffused because in the long run Pakistan cricket would have been the loser," the former skipper said. "He should learn a lesson from this and be very careful in choosing his words from now on," he said. Butt had stirred the hornet''s when he pointed his finger towards the English cricketers for their role in the batting collapse that cost England the Oval ODI. "There were talks in the bookmakers circle that English players were involved in throwing matches during the ODI series," Butt had said. Butt''s comments came after the ICC had launched an investigation into claims by the ''Sun'' newspaper that said bookmakers knew details of Pakistan''s innings during the Oval ODI which the visitors won by 23 runs.

Suspended Pak players left to fight ICC on their own

Thu, Sep 30 10 09:08 PM

Lahore, Sep 30 (PTI) The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is not providing any financial assistance to the three suspended players in their legal battle against the International Cricket Council (ICC). "The three have hired lawyers who are representing the players in their effort to get the suspensions removed and their names cleared in the spot-fixing allegations," a PCB source told PTI. Mohammad Asif will be represented by a British lawyer, Elizabeth Robertson, while Salman Butt''s lawyers are Khalid Ranjha and Aftab Gul. "Muhammad Aamir''s case is being fought by Shahid Karim who also represented Asif in his doping suspension case two years ago," the source said. Butt had earlier approached Pakistan''s top lawyer and a former Federal Minister, Aitzaz Ahsan to represent him but they couldn''t settle on a fee. "Since the players have been told they have to pay the lawyers themselves, Butt couldn''t afford Ahsan''s fee," the source said. Karim told PTI that his client (Aamir) is yet file a detailed reply to the ICC notice sent to him explaining the suspension. "We had asked for an extension from the ICC to file the detailed reply and they have given us time until October 5. We are in the process of filing an appeal against the provisional suspension and also against the allegations made against Aamir," Karim said. The lawyer said that the ICC had, in its notice, said that Aamir had bowled two no-balls on purpose in the fourth Test against England at Lord''s, which amounted to fixing and betting under ICC''s Anti-Corruption Code of Conduct. "We will file two appeals to the ICC, one against the suspension and one against the allegations," Karim said. Butt has already filed an appeal against his suspension while a board official said that Asif''s reply would be filed directly in London to the ICC.

CWG build-up: QBR arrives, 1250 check in amid 2 pullouts

Thu, Sep 30 10 08:52 PM

New Delhi, Sep 30 (PTI) The buzz surrounding the Commonwealth Games began to increase with the arrival of the Queen''s Baton Relay as around 1250 athletes and officials also checked in for the mega-event, which is just three days away from being declared open. The final countdown to the Games began with the baton arriving at the Organising Committee headquarters to a jubilant reception with hordes of volunteers lustily cheering as the baton carrying the Queen''s message made its entry into the premises. The baton commenced its over 1,90,000 Km journey at the Buckingham Palace in London on October 29 last year and moved on to visit 70 Commonwealth nations and territories across six regions of the globe. It entered India from Pakistan through the Wagah Border in Punjab on June 25 this year and travelled across the country undertaking a 100-day journey. Over the next two days, it will visit some of Delhi''s prominent locations including Vijay Chowk, India Gate, the Red Fort, Qutub Minar, Lotus Temple and Raj Ghat among others. Even as the beautification drive in Delhi gained momentum for the big day, the organisers had to contend with the pullout of the Australian duo of defending discus throw champion Scott Martin sprint-hurdler Hayley Butler. While Martin is down with a pectoral muscle injury, Butler is nursing a calf muscle problem. On a day when it was announced that International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge would be attending the opening ceremony on Sunday, around 1250 athletes and officials arrived to take the total number of competitors past 5500 in the three days before the start of the mega-event. With 7200 athletes expected to take part in the Games, more than two-thirds have reached the Indian capital. After weeks of negative press, the mood began to turn positive with visiting athletes expressing satisfaction with the improvements at the Games Village, which had been at the center of a row over cleanliness just a few days ago. In fact, Delhi''s Lt Governer Tejinder Khanna even went to the extent of saying that the Village was good enough to host an Olympics. "The Games Village that we have is the finest ever and is ready to host the Olympics or any other multi-discipline world class meet. I am not the only one saying this. Many foreign delegates during their visit were so impressed with our facility that they have told me that we should bid for Olympics now," Khanna said. There was more talk of bringing the biggest sporting show to India from Kalmadi himself despite being heavily criticised for the crisis-hit build-up to the Commonwealth Games. MORE PTI Team PM MRM

Busty tranny claims he had sex with married Premier League footie star

Published>Thu, Sep 30 10 08:38 PM

London, Sept 30 (ANI): A busty transvestite has come forward with claims that he had sex with married Fulham football player Carlos Salcido.

Yamille Herrera, 24, said on Mexico's TV Notas that Salcido, 30, who plays for Mexico, had no idea she was really a he.

Herrera was asked if there was "a sexual encounter, a sexual relationship".

"Yes," the Sun quoted him as replying to the question.

Herrera told how they kissed passionately before Salcido submitted to being pleasured in a hotel bathroom where international players had held a wild bash after beating Columbia 1-0 in a friendly on September 7.

Salcido only came to know the true nature of Herrera during an online chat when the transvestite confessed to the defender.

"I'm not a girl," Herrera told the player.

"He was very shocked. Imagine! He was very surprised, asking, 'Why didn't you tell me?'" Herrera revealed.

Salcido has vowed to sue the transvestite, and a Fulham spokesman has confirmed the player insists the claims are a pack of lies.

"This situation has already passed into the hands of the lawyer. We'll see what happens," Salcido stated. (ANI)

Champion discus thrower Scott Martin pulls out

Thu, Sep 30 10 08:16 PM

Melbourne, Sep 30 (PTI) Star pull-outs continued ahead of the Commonwealth Games with defending champion discus thrower Scott Martin of Australia withdrawing from the mega event due to a chest injury. Martin, who also won a bronze medal in shot put in the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, injured a chest muscle while competing at the Oceania Athletics Championships in Cairns, North Queensland, last week. Martin, who was due to fly to New Delhi today, said he was disappointed not to defend his title next week. "I''ve had a category one or grade one tear in my right pectoral, which has disabled me from throwing, so I''m not going to make the trip," Martin was quoted as saying by ''Australian Broadcasting Corporation''. "It''s a very difficult decision not to go, but the decision was made for me I guess with the injury. I really couldn''t compete, certainly not at my best and there would be no opportunity to train before the competition," he said. 26-year-old 100m hurdler Hayley Butler also withdrew from the Games to recover from stress fractures in both feet. She was to run alongside Australia''s Olympic silver medallist Sally Pearson. Swimmers reinforce commitment to compete in Delhi

Published>Thu, Sep 30 10 03:38 PM

New Delhi,Sept.30 (ANI): Australian freestyle swimmer Ashley Callus and England's synchronised swimming medal hope Jenna Randall have said they will travel to the Indian capital to compete in the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi.

Media reports in Australia said the Australian swimming squad flew out to its training camp in Kuala Lumpur ahead of the Games' opening ceremony in eight days.

"There's excitement because I'm heading to my fourth Commonwealth Games, but there's also anxiousness to see what it's actually like over there," The Courier Mail quoted Callus, as saying. "They keep us updated on the security issues and how the Games Village is coming along... with this information everyone can make informed decisions.

"For me, personally, (events in Delhi) have not impacted on my motivation or want to go and compete. I am 110 per cent ready to rock 'n' roll," said the 31-year-old who won a gold medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, silver at 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games and bronze at 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Across the globe, Jenna Randall insisted reports from Delhi have not put her off her preparation as she bids to further raise the profile of synchronised swimming. The 21-year-old will leave for her training base in Doha on Monday before heading to in Delhi.

Randall, who will compete in Delhi alongside long-time duet partner Olivia Allison, remains committed to the English cause. She is determined to not only travel to India but also improve on the silver she won in Melbourne four years ago. "I'm just concentrating on training and trying to get the best out of the time before the Commonwealth Games, because we leave on Monday," she told Eurosport. "We are focusing on training and putting in our best performance at the Games. Everything else is out of our hands. We just have to concentrate on what we do."

The obvious next step on Randall's career path will be to go one better than 2006 and claim gold at the Commonwealth Games next month. And, after that, an Olympic medal.

"The Commonwealth Games are definitely a stepping stone to Olympic glory," she said."It's a major competition for us and every competition is great for us to go out there and improve Great Britain's reputation in synchro." (ANI)

PCB chief withdraws remarks against English players

Published>Thu, Sep 30 10 03:17 PM

Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Ijaz Butt has withdrawn his remarks in which he had alleged that England player had thrown the third one-dayer against Pakistan at the Oval but maintained that he was misunderstood.

Butt had said England players were paid "enormous amounts of money" to lose the third ODI match at the Oval.

Responding to his remarks, the England and Wales Cricket Board had threatened legal action and demanded an unreserved apology from him.

Butt met his ECB counterpart Giles Clarke in London yesterday and both the boards issued a joint statement.

"I wish personally and on behalf of the Pakistan Cricket Board to withdraw the comments I made concerning the England and Wales Cricket Board and each of the England players who played in the NatWest One Day International at the Brit Insurance Oval on Friday 17 September.

"It is regrettable that there was a misunderstanding arising from my comments," the statement said.

Butt said he "never intended to question the behaviour and integrity of the England players nor the ECB nor to suggest that any of them were involved in any corrupt practices or in a conspiracy against Pakistan cricket."

Butt had earlier said that he was merely stating what the bookies were saying.

He now said, "I wish to make it clear that I have never seen any evidence of any wrong doing by any England player or the ECB at any time.

"I deeply and sincerely regret that my statements have been interpreted to cast doubt upon the good names of the England players and the ECB and hope that this public withdrawal will draw a line under the matter."

In the same statement ECB and the England players who played at the Brit Insurance Oval warmly said they "welcome this withdrawal and now regard the matter closed."

ECB chairman Giles Clarke confirmed that following this statement he is continuing in his role as the ICC Pakistan Task Team chairman.

Smoking ban goes up in smoke inside CWG Village

Thu, Sep 30 10 03:07 PM

New Delhi, Sep 30 (PTI) The smoking ban inside the sprawling Games Village here seems to have gone up in smoke as some could be seen puffing cigarettes with impunity. An African origin worker carrying out electrical works in a makeshift toilet inside the well-guarded campus was happily smoking in a corner. Asked how he managed to get the cigarettes through, he showed his handkerchief. Inside one of the layers of the well folded handkerchief were two cigarettes. Though the African was hiding away from public glare and smoking, another foreign worker getting the AC fixed at the media centre, was enjoying his puff out in open. When pointed out, a volunteer quickly walked up to him and asked him to stub it. He did oblige, but not before taking one last long drag. As per international norms, all sports sites have to be a strictly no smoking zones. "Everyday many cigarettes butts are found by the cleaning staff inside the village. If someone smokes inside, away from public, how can he be caught," a volunteer asked. No-smoking boards are prominently displayed inside the village but then some just don''t care.

Armed forces need AFPSA, says top official

Published>Thu, Sep 30 10 02:57 PM

Shillong, Sep 30 (IANS) Outgoing Assam Rifles Chief Lt. Gen Yadava has said the controversial Armed Force Special Powers Act (AFSPA) was a vital shield for armed forces battling insurgents.

'It is upto the centre and states to enforce or repeal or modify the act. But I want to make it clear that it is the state and centre which empower us with this legislation,' Gen Yadava told IANS.

Stating that 'AFSPA has been politicised to a large extent', Yadava, who retired Thursday, said the legislation, which gives the armed forces legal immunity for what they do, was an enabling law, not an arbitrary one.

Rights activists say that AFSPA, which is enforced in Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, Tripura, Assam and Nagaland and some other parts of the northeast like Meghalaya, gives the armed forces authority to kill or detain terror suspects in insurgency-prone areas.

'A jawan will have to fire when a gun is targeted at him. He has to take a spot decision in the overall interest of the nation. For that he should not be dragged to the court,' Yadava said.

But Meghalaya Governor R.S. Mooshahary, who favours the repeal of AFSPA in the region, has said that its prolonged use had alienated the civil society.

'We cannot contain insurgency related violence by alienating the citizens. We can do so more effectively by involving them,' said Mooshahary, a former National Security Guards chief.

Irom Sharmila Chanu, a rights activist, has been on indefinite strike for nearly a decade in Manipur, demanding the withdrawal of APSPA from the state.

Several rights groups, including the influential North East Students Organisation (NESO), have demanded the withdrawal of AFSPA from the northeastern region.

'Instead of solving the militancy problem in the northeast, the act is complicating the situation. It has resulted in a war between the people and members of the armed forces,' said NESO vice-chairman Lalmuanpula Punte.

The central government has named a five-member committee headed by Supreme Court Justice B.P. Jeevan Reddy to study if the act was required or not.

After visiting all affected states, the committee submitted its report to the central government in October 2006.

Girls lured to Delhi CWG for work being sold to brothels

Published>Thu, Sep 30 10 02:51 PM

New Delhi, Sept.30 (ANI): Under aged girls are being lured to Delhi for work at the Commonwealth Games, only to be sold to brothels.

According to The Australian, the Indian Government has issued an alert, after receiving numerous reports that girls from the country's poor tribal states are being exploited by sex-traffickers.

The advisory by India's Home Ministry says: "The victims are mostly those who are promised work in Delhi ahead of the Commonwealth Games by fraudulent placement agencies but instead are likely to be trafficked."

It adds: "Minor girls are the main target. Strict action is urgently required against those involved in such trafficking, both in the source, transit and destination areas."

Hundreds of young girls from poverty-stricken rural states have been successfully trafficked into the city's burgeoning number of brothels, massage parlours and escort agencies.

Kailash Pathak, from rural West Bengal, fears his 13-year-old daughter, Khushbu, is among them.

The Australian accompanied Pathak this week as he searched seedy Delhi's red-light-district for any sign of her.

He said he had tracked down a man he claims stole his daughter and reported him to police.

"I rang him and said, 'Have you taken my girl?' And he said, 'What if I have? What can you do about it?'"

The man, Pappu Bagel, confessed to The Australian from a police cell that he led Khushbu away from her home but denied it had been against her will.

According to the paper, Delhi's illegal but thriving prostitution racket has been gearing up for several months for the Commonwealth Games. Several establishments have reportedly been running basic English classes for their workers and renovating premises for foreign visitors.

Delhi police have raided a number of brothels in the city's red-light district in recent weeks.

A police superintendent from one inner-city district said about 80 young girls had been seized from brothels and traffickers in the past six months. (ANI)

Busty tranny claims he had sex with married Premier League footie star

Published>Thu, Sep 30 10 02:37 PM

(ANI)

Becks' no Tiger Woods, says top madam

Published>Thu, Sep 30 10 02:21 PM

London, Sep 30 (ANI): A top escort boss has branded hooker Irma Nici's claims she bedded champ footballer David Beckham as a 'ridiculous pack of lies'.

Michelle Braun said that if he had been hiring call girls and sleeping around in America, she would have certainly heard about it.

"I worked with the best in the business and my girls served the top sports stars all over the globe. Beckham has never been involved with working girls. He is too goody two-shoes for that," the Sun quoted Michelle as saying.

Braun made more than 3 million pounds as the head of a high-class call girl ring and claimed she supplied escorts, including Loredana Jolie, to golf ace Tiger Woods, 34.

"He's no Tiger Woods. I've known some of the best-looking call girls and glamour girls all over the world. A number of them tried to s*** David Beckham but none of them succeeded - not even for free," top escort services boss added.

She signed off saying that she has never heard of Nici before. (ANI)

Oz champion cyclist says heavy security for Delhi CWG has left her fearless

Published>Thu, Sep 30 10 02:17 PM

New Delhi, Sep 30(ANI): Australian Olympic gold medal cyclist Anna Meares insists that she is comforted by the security presence in New Delhi for the Commonwealth Games.

Meares said that she was anxious about security threats before arriving in the Indian capital for the October 3-14 Games, but having experienced the stiff security at close quarters, she had little fears left.

"The anxiety level was before we got here. When we get on to a bus and see all the military guys with armoured guns, I've never been that close to guns before ... it's something that made us feel a lot more comfortable on the journey from the airport to the village," The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Meares, as saying.

"It's just part and parcel of the world we live in at the moment," she added.

She further lamented the attitude of several champion British cyclists who have withdrawn from the mega event.

"We want to win and win against the best in the world and currently those guys are the best in the world. I can't speak for the Brits and the attitude they have taken to these Commonwealth Games, but they are important to me, important to the Australian people and that's why I am here," Meares said.

"I think you have to take them for what they are, and that is the spirit of great competition, friendliness and bringing nations together - I like being a part of this," she added. (ANI)

ICC acknowledges receiving Salman Butt's appeal against suspension

Published>Thu, Sep 30 10 02:07 PM

Lahore, Sep 30 (ANI): The International Cricket Council (ICC) Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat, has confirmed that Salman Butt, one of the three Pakistan players implicated in the spot-mixing scandal, has appealed against his provisional suspension by the ICC under its anti-corruption code.

"Late yesterday, Salman through his attorney filed his appeal against provisional suspension," the Daily Times quoted Lorgat, as saying in a statement.

"In fact, ICC Code of Conduct Commission chairman Michael Beloff will consider it and we are in the process of sending it. We will try to be as expeditious and we will try to do it best as quickly as possible. In the meantime the player remains provisionally suspended from all cricket. The other two players have filed no appeals," he added.

As per the ICC's anti-corruption code of conduct for provisional suspensions, a provisional hearing will now take place where 'it shall be the burden of the ACSU's general manager to establish: (a) that there is a strong, arguable case against the player on the charge(s) that have been made against him; and (b) that, in such circumstances, the integrity of the sport could be seriously undermined if a provisional suspension was not imposed against him."

Three players- Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer were served notices on September 2 after the ICC felt they had 'a case to answer.' The trio requested for extra time in filing their appeals, which was granted and subsequently, the new deadline was set for October 2.

The Pakistani trio were alleged to be involved in bowling deliberate, pre-planned no-balls during Pakistan's fourth Test at Lord's against England. However, Scotland Yard, after interrogating them, levelled no charges and allowed the trio to return home, on an undertaking that they would return to Britain when required. The players will now go through an ICC hearing over the unspecified charges contained in the governing body's code of conduct. (ANI)
