Chidambaram honours world judoka champ Kalpana Devi

New Delhi, Sep 30 (PTI) Union Home Minister P Chidambaram today awarded judoka Kalpana Devi with a cash prize of Rs 1.5 lakh for winning a bronze medal in the World Cup in Tashkent, Uzbekistan recently. Kalpana created history when she defeated Nazaraova Shokhida of Uzbekistan in the 52 kg weight category to become the country''s first judoka to win a medal in the world cup. Thanks to her exploits, the judoka has been selected for the Guangzhou Asian Games in November. Kalpana''s coach, Assistant Commandant Vireder Singh, was also presented with a cash award of Rs 30,000. A total of 103 judokas from 17 countries including USA, Russia, Japan, Israel, South Korea, Spain, Ukraine, Vietnam etc. took part in the world cup.
