Phil Mickelson is set to fire the first shot in anger at the Ryder Cup later on Friday when the United States begin the defence of their trophy at Celtic Manor.

The world number two will partner rookie Dustin Johnson in the opening fourballs against Europe's Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer as the talking stops and the action begins in the 38th edition of the biennial team event.

"We wanted to get off early, we enjoy playing first," Mickelson, appearing at his eighth Ryder Cup, told reporters after captains Colin Montgomerie and Corey Pavin revealed their combinations at Thursday's opening ceremony.

Rory McIlroy, Europe's youngest team member this week, begins his Ryder Cup career with fellow Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell against Stewart Cink and Matt Kuchar.

Most eyes will be on Tiger Woods as the world number one, who needed a pick from Pavin after a poor year by his high standards, partners Steve Stricker against Europeans Ian Poulter and Ross Fisher on the Twenty Ten course.

The fourth match features Luke Donald and Padraig Harrington against American rookies Bubba Watson and Jeff Overton. Heavy rain and winds are expected early on Friday before an improvement ahead of the afternoon foursomes.
