New Delhi, Oct 1(ANI): New Zealand's Commonwealth Games team boss Dave Currie has backed the Organising Committee's decision to prevent Kiwi athletes from leaving their secure athletes' village to explore New Delhi.
The Delhi Commonwealth Games Organising Committee had made the decision in the interest of athletes' safety.
"I know we've got some intrepid travellers in the party who kind of want to get out and see stuff. My hope, really, is that they understand the collective responsibility that we have for one another and that if something happens to someone it's not just the individual who is affected," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Currie, as saying.
"It affects the whole team. We are here to compete and perform. We aren't here as tourists. We are creating the high performance environment and they are high performance athletes who are here in Delhi to compete."
"My sense is that they don't want to do anything that will get in the way of that," he added.
Currie also revealed that one rival country's chef de mission believes that the extensive bag and body searches carried out outside athletes' village and venues are "too obtrusive".
"The security checks are thorough to the point where some of my colleagues are not comfortable with them. They believe it's a tad intrusive. The chef de mission who said that will remain nameless," Currie said.
"It was brought up at the meeting this morning and he felt it was something he wasn't used to having parts of his body patted that haven't been patted of late. He was very delicate about it."
"Look, the sense is that everybody was concerned about security so the Indians are making sure that not on their watch will anything happen. In my view, we've found that it's been really thorough," he added. (ANI)
