New Delhi, Oct 5 (PTI) The much-touted Sports Injury Centre here, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh barely days before the Commonwealth Games, has no sports medicine specialist yet at its disposal. Even eight months after placing an advertisement for the post of a sports medicine specialist, the Sports Injury Centre (SIC) has not received any response. While inaugurating the hospital, it was expected that it may be helpful in catering to the needs of CWG athletes. "We had placed an advertisement in the month of February for the post of specialists related to sports injury. All positions have been filled except for the post of sports medicine specialist. No one has applied yet for it," Dr N K Mohanty, medical superintendent, Safdarjung Hospital, said. Sports medicine doctors specialise in treating patients engaged in a variety of athletic activities in a manner that allows the players to return to play after injury. Their main aim is to help these people improve their lifestyle and enhance their performance. Sports medicine doctors often work with other medical professionals such as physical therapists, nurses, nutritionists, exercise physiologists and sports psychologists to develop prevention and treatment plans. "The ministry will place another advertisement for this specific post again," a Health Ministry official said. He also felt that comparatively lower salary at the government sector may be one of the reasons for the failure to attract candidates. Established to provide world class treatment for sports-related injuries to sportspersons of the country, the SIC had advertised for medical staff for the post of sports psychologist, orthosurgeons, anaesthesiologist, physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist, psychiatrist, cardiologist, sports medicine specialist and dental surgeons. The centre, built at a cost of Rs 70 crore, has an in-patient capacity of 35 beds in two wards with all the modern facilities. It was inaugurated recently ahead of the Commonwealth Games 2010.
