Winner Sports plans six flagship stores

Winner Sports, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pantaloon Retail India that runs Planet Sports chain of retail stores, has revamped its store across the country. October onwards, the chain plans to have six flagship stores in the top six cities of with an avegare area of 6,000-10,000 sq ft.

Planet Sports has 47 operational stores across 21 cities, while Winner Sports has 69 stores that the retailer run in cities such as Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Ahmedabad, among others. The plan of setting up flagship stores is followed by rolling out stores in the state capitals with size of 4,500 sq ft. For the fiscal, it has plans to open 12 stores.

Ravdeep Singh, chief executive officer, Planet Sports said, "We are planning to open 12 stores in this fiscal, with an investment of around Rs 40 crore. The average size of the stores would be close to 8,000-10,000 square feet."

The stores sells lifestyle products, sportswear and equipment across all categories and houses foreign sports brands like Fila, Lotto, Reebok, Nike , Adidas, Puma, Sketchers and Salomon. Moreover, it also runs an agency business where in, the chain has license to sell brands such as Converse, Speedo, Spolding, Wilson, Prince and Airwalk, apart from selling its private labels such as US Polo and Rig. Singh said the total size of the sports market in India including organised and unorganised retail, deals, sponsorships and partnerships, is about Rs 10,000 crore. He expects the company's topline to be around Rs 700 crore by 2011-12, with a growth of 30-35% in sales, which would be net of tax.
