The structure in blue glass, better known as Thyagaraja Stadium, stands tall in the quiet residential colony behind the Capital's famous INA market.
Designed by Australian firm Peddle Thorp, the stadium, to host netball tournaments, has been made in a rectangular shape. "The building has been designed keeping in mind use for various purposes, any sport or recreational activity, after the Commonwealth Games. We wanted to leave a legacy behind," said project manager Anil Pandit.
Peddle Thorp currently operates from Brisbane, Cairns, Jakarta, Gold Coast and Shanghai. One of its latest designs includes a six-star spa resort being built in middle of ocean, accessible only by water taxis, in Tianjin, China.
Amid space constraints ? the company had merely 16 acres available ? the stadium houses one match court and two warm-up courts.
Interestingly, the 18,122 sq m roof has no single joint. The 'Kalzip roof' ? which has seven layers, each serving a different purpose ? has been built by a Japanese firm.
In Thyagaraja Stadium, the first layer is aluminium profile, which is water and vapour proof. The second layer is of rockwool with man-made mineral fibre and is used for insulation. The third layer is on texon sheet, which is also waterproof. These three sheets are repeated again till the seven layers are neatly piled. The roof is flexible; it sinks under your feet.
Calcium silicate tiles in the stadium, used for the false ceiling, have been made from recycled domestic waste.
The floors have been laid using recycled PVC, which was imported from England. Maple wood, approved by F?d?ration Internationale de Basketball, the international federation of basketball, has been imported from the United States for the sports floor.
To build the structure, fly ash bricks have been used and to reduce heat conductivity, cavities have been created between the walls. Interestingly, all wires and electrical fitting have been adjusted in these cavities only.
