Russia named a second-string team for next month's Fed Cup first-round tie against Serbia, the country's tennis federation said on Thursday.
Russia captain Shamil Tarpishchev was forced to rely on world number 31 Alisa Kleybanova, 39th-ranked Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Vera Dushevina (40) and Ekaterina Makarova (59) after all their leading players turned down the invitation.
World number two Dinara Safina, third-ranked Svetlana Kuznetsova, Elena Dementieva, Vera Zvonareva, Maria Sharapova and Nadia Petrova said they could not attend the Feb. 6-7 clash in Belgrade due to injuries or schedule issues.
Russia, who won the Fed Cup four times between 2004 and 2008, lost to eventual champions Italy in last year's semi-finals.
